Steven Fry's Doppelgänger

Steven Fry's Doppelgänger

Funny that a German word, invented in the 18th century by writer Jean Paul in the novel Siebenkäs  (1796), has been used in the English language without alterations. In my humble opinion the word "Doppelgänger" is not the same as "look-alike". It is stronger, i.e. Doppelgänger refers to an "identical" person, not to somebody that resembles another person.

While studying the rich Russian history of film making, I came across a famous actress: Фаина Георгиевна Раневская, in Roman alphabet "Faina Georgievna Ranevskaya". Miss Raveyskaya (August 27, 1896 - July 19, 1984) is considered as one of the most popular Soviet Russian actresses of all time. She appeared in over twenty motion pictures, between 1934 and 1970.

I got a shock when I came across an early photograph of Miss Raveyskaya, tought to be taken in the 1930's.

Faina Georgievna Ranevskaya

To my amazement, the young Miss Raveyskaya in this picture is a real Doppelgänger of the British actor and writer Stephen Fry (Londen, 24 augustus 1957) He can't be her reincarnation, since Steven Fry was born before Miss Raveyskaya past away. Perhaps Steven is an relative to Miss Raveyskaya, as her maiden name was Faina Feldman. A not uncommon name in the U.K. Who knows?

Life is full of mysteries. This Doppelgänger-puzzle is just one of them...
