Ruminghem Chinese Cemetery

Northern France is well known for its First World War battle fields. In these WWI battle fields around the Yser, Somme and Marne hundreds of thousands of young men lost their lives in The Great War, that they believed would be the last war ever. (How wrong could they be)

Today, hundreds of smaller and bigger cemeteries, all over the area, remind the traveller of the fierceness and ferociousness of this war, and the high toll that has been paid in blood.

Most of us think of the soldiers as being Germans on one side, with  French and English on the opposite side of the trenches. We should be well aware that in the second decade of the twentieth century, Britain "ruled the waves", and still was an empire, with colonies all over the globe. Many a 'British' soldier was recruited in these colonies.

I knew of Canadian, Australian, South-African, and even Indian cemeteries in "Le Nord", but on one of my many visits to the region, I was surprised by the 'discovery' of a... Chinese cemetery. Seventy-seven graves, including 39 burials brought here after the war from St. Pol-sur-Mer, are resting forever in a tiny place called Ruminghem.

During WWI, the Headquarters of No. 11 Labour Group and a Chinese Hospital were stationed at Ruminghem. Ruminghem Chinese Cemetery was begun in August, 1917, and closed in July, 1919. It is hidden behind a couple of houses, in a tiny street called "Rue du Cimetière Chinois", about 20 Miles from Calais, on the route from Ruminghem to Muncq-Nieurlet.

I was there on the 23th of April and had the privilege of meeting the first swallow of the year, who was flying over the graveyard, shouting as if in honour to these brave men, who died over ninety years ago.

Queen Elisabeth turns 83
(° 21 April 1926)

It seems that the secret of a long and healthy life is to keep on working and never retire. And that is exactly what Elisabeth Alexandra Mary, als o known as Queen Elisabeth II has been doing since the 2nd of June, 1953.

Elisabeth II is the queen regnant of sixteen independent states known as the Commonwealth realms: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. More than a handfull for a 83 year old mother of four, who all but one got diverced.

Today, Queen Elisabeth will be spending the day privately at Windsor Castle with her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Union flags will be flown above government buildings until sunset in her honour, while the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will provide a 41-Gun Salute using six 13 pounder First World War guns.

The official celebration of her birthday is held in June, with the Trooping the Colour parade.

Three chears for the Queen, hip hip hurray, hip hip hurray, hip hip hurray!

Monday = Bradbury Day

Auntie BBC seems to have re-christened "Monday" into "Julia Bradbury Day".

Fans of the 1970 Irish-born British television presenter will be delighted, but isn't scheduling THREE different shows around one single presenter on the same day just a trifle over the top?

Monday 20 April 2009 :
19.30H - BBC 1 - Watchdog, presented by ... Julia Bradbury
19.30H - BBC 4 -  Railway Walks, presented by ... Julia Bradbury
20.00H - BBC 2 -  Wainwright Walks, presented by ... Julia Bradbury

As one can observe, the hardcore Bradbury-fan does need a video-recorder, since the Bradbury-shows on BBC4 and BBC1 are scheduled at the same moment in time.

And for the die-hard Julia Bradbury fan, there are still the DVD's...

  • Wainwright's Walks Series 1 - presented by Julia Bradbury (2007)
  • Wainwright's Walks Series 2 - presented by Julia Bradbury (2008)
  • Julia Bradbury's Railway Walks (2009)

Barack Hussein Obama

new president of USA

"A Historical Victory", "First Black President", "McCain Beaten By A Landslide", etc, etc.

The news headlines are clear: America has chosen a new president, and it is Barack Obama.  Contrary to George W Bush or Lyndon B Johnson, the new president will certainly NOT use his middle name, since it brings back memories of a certain Iraqi dictator...

Thanks to the American voting system, a small majority of the votes (52% vs 47%) resulted in a 349 vs 147 number of electoral votes. The Democrats have won this election well and truly deserved, just like they SHOULD have four years ago, when the Florida votes were tampered with and George W was re-elected.

The name of Barack Obama may be etched in history as America's first black president, the new leader will face a great challenge of leading the world's most dominant nation through the economic crisis and two unfinished wars, (all) started by the Republicans.

PoPoL wishes the new "president of the world" all the best and hopes Mr. Obama will bring peace and prosperity to the world.

World's first test tube baby turns 30

July 25th, 1978 was a very special day in history for the (medical) world: it was the day Louise Joy Brown was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. Louise Brown was the world's first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilisation, or IVF.

Brown was born to Lesley and John Brown, who had been trying to conceive for nine years. On November 10, 1977, Lesley Brown underwent the procedure by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.

Louise Brown was born at 11:47 p.m. at Oldham General Hospital, through a planned caesarean section. She weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces (2.608 kg) at birth.

On Friday, July 25, 2008, Louise will celebrate her 30th birthday. She is now the mother of Cameron, who was born on December 20, 2006, and who was conceived naturally.

BDSM Barbie

In Europe, Black Canary is an unknown character. So before we'll talk about the new Barbie doll, let's introduce the original Canary Gril to the public: Black Canary is a fictional character, a DC Comics superheroine. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Carmine Infantino, the character first appeared in Flash Comics #86 (August 1947).

Black Canary is noted for her martial-arts skills and her "Canary Cry" – a high powered, sonic scream with the ability to shatter objects and incapacitate villains. Among the first generation of superheroes, she was a member of the Justice Society of America, the first superhero team to appear in comic books.

In the 1980s, the character's history was rewritten to make her two entities: Dinah Drake Lance, who took part in Golden Age adventures and married Gotham City detective Larry Lance, and their daughter Dinah Laurel Lance, who has appeared in modern stories.

The combination of the Black Canary's courage, fighting prowess, and her sex appeal (accentuated by her characteristic fishnet stockings) has resulted in her being referred to as "The Blonde Bombshell."

Recently, Mattel, the toy company, decited to create a Barbie outfit in honour of Canary Girl. The new Barbie doll will be on sale soon, but has created a lot of controverse: a number of people think the new outfit is too sexy for the toy doll. They accuse Mattel of sexually intimidating the children.

A Britsch religious group, the Christian Voice said: “Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”

I.m.h.o. children will not know what "sexually suggstive clothing" is, so they won't mind.

It's the filthy mind of the one beholder that makes it a problem...
